Episode 33: Amy Cothren: Stay at Home Moms: Squashing the hot mess mom culture

Amy Cothren is here with me today to talk about the value of being a stay-at-home mom and squashing the hot mess mom culture!

Amy Cothren is the host and creator of her podcast, Mom: In Process, which speaks mostly to stay-at-home moms (SAHMs) about the importance of working on themselves in order to raise the future generation. In addition to the podcast, she offers her 1 on 1 mentoring for SAHMs who need the support of another mama friend.

Amy is now on a mission to share her experiences with other women and help guide them to a place where they love the role they are in, with a Mama Mindset.

So why squash the hot mess mom culture?

Originally the hot mess saying was to help moms in that they aren’t supposed to be perfect and put together because moms are busy and always outpouring to others. She understands where it came from, but she wants to talk about where it has gone. It has validated this stagnant lifestyle and victim mentality of “I’ve had kids so it’s allowed for me to not take care of myself or put together.”

Amy wants to empower moms - especially stay-at-home moms to tell them it doesn’t have to be that way day in and day out!

If you have a bad day once in a while, that’s ok! We all do. But the hot mess mom culture is continuing to validate this behavior.

Amy opens up and shares about how as a mom (and she isn’t alone in this) felt like she has to fit a certain mold in mom groups or raise her kids to go to church. She had to push that aside and wants her kids to be unique themselves. And how will her children see their uniqueness if she is trying to fit into a mold that she doesn’t belong in?

Moms are a pillar of strength in their home, so they should start acting like it! As a single-family income, Amy’s husband depends on her for support around the house, and it’s biological for children to lean on their mothers for all of their needs. So we need to step up and be that pillar of strength for them that we really are!

We also talked about how being a stay-at-home mom is a job, and that you treat it as such, as well as how important it is to make sure you put value in your role as a stay-at-home mother!

This was such great conversation! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
